A DECLARATION
OF COMMITMENT
Metro Baguio Consumers Movement
IN RECOGNITION of the urgent necessity to stop the onslaught of globalization
policies (liberalization, privatization and deregulation) which had caused
the entry of greedy foreign capitalists to the country at the expense
of the consuming public;
IN AFFIRMATION of the call to address the degradation of the quality
of life of ordinary consumers brought about by the privatization of basic
social services and public utilities, oil deregulation and the imposition
of unsound taxes among others;
IN ACCEPTANCE of the challenges to raise the awareness of the wider public
through education; to expand the advocacy and networking of the movement;
to work for concrete gains through lobbying, legislation and mobilization;
and to popularize consumers’ issues at the local, national and international
levels;
IN OUR RESOLVE to advance consumers’ rights specifically the right
to free and accessible basic social services, affordable electric and
water services, reasonable prices of oil products, fair prices of commodities,
just taxes for local small and medium enterprises and the protection from
unsound imposition of taxes, like text tax;
IN OUR STRUGGLE to defend our national sovereignty, specifically the
much-tattered independence of the Philippines from foreign economic interference;
WE, the Convenors, Members and Advocates of the Metro-Baguio Consumers
Movement hereby commit ourselves to the tasks ahead of us in accordance
with the above-mentioned objectives and plans of the movement;
WE VOW to contest any further attempt to exploit the already impoverished
consumers who are now in constant struggle for daily survival; and finally;
WE PLEDGE to be of service to the Metro-Baguio populace in our collective
pursuit of our economic rights and well-being, as an inherent component
of our basic human rights.
