Indigenous peoples,
church, academe and IP advocates hold Sandugo confab to cap the end of
UN Decade of Indigenous Peoples
Today, at Quezon City Memorial Circle, more than two hundred
indigenous peoples from the different regions, church people, environmentalists,
members of the academe, students and other professionals will hold a two-day
Sandugo Solidarity Conference to cap the end of the UN Decade of Indigenous
Peoples.
The Conference will also be attended by local government officials from
the Committee on Indigenous Peoples of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of
the Province of Capiz.
The two-day Solidarity Conference with the theme “Strengthen
and Consolidate Our Ranks, Celebrate Our Victories and Survival Toward
Continuing Resistance Against National Oppression” is part of the
Sandugo Solidarity Festival 2004 launched by the Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong
Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (KAMP) in cooperation with the National Council
of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP). The event will “Celebrate
the Struggle for Ancestral Land Rights & Self-Determination”
of the Indigenous Peoples.
Earlier, church people and other IP advocates embarked on
the Sandugo Solidarity Missions (SSMs) to various indigenous peoples’
communities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. “The SSMs went to indigenous
peoples’ communities that have incessantly fought tough battles
against large-scale commercial projects and consequent human rights abuses
by armed government troops. They will see first hand the impact of big
dam projects, large-scale mining operations and various schemes in which
the government and foreign and local big business have relentlessly grabbed
ancestral lands, and how indigenous peoples are organizing themselves,”
Mr. Nonoy Gobrin, National Coordinator of Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong
Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (KAMP) and over-all coordinator of Sandugo Solidarity
Mission said.
“Sandugo, which means ‘bloodpact’, will
bring together indigenous peoples from across the Philippines to discuss
common issues and experiences in struggle, and to unite other concerned
sectors around the struggle for ancestral domain and self-determination,”
Mr. Nonoy Gobrin, KAMP Coordinator said.
