HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH

November 30, 2007

back to top back to top

The Cordillera Peoples Alliance and the Tongtongan ti Umili is one with the call of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to STEP DOWN!

Seven years of the Arroyo Presidency has brought extreme suffering and misery among the Filipino people. It has done nothing to alleviate the abject poverty among the Filipinos. Instead, it continues to bow down to the dictates of its imperialist masters in the further liberalization, deregulation and privatization of Philippine economy. It has been inutile in preventing another round of oil price hike that has led to the further escalating of prices of basic goods and services.

Amidst the poor condition of the Filipino people, the Arroyo presidency shamelessly wallows in corruption. The President and the rest of the First Family have been shamelessly involved in a series of frauds using public funds for their private and political interest. We have not yet forgotten the abrasive diversion of public funds meant for farmers and the Hello Garci incident to ensure her victory in the 2004 electoral fraud. We have not forgotten the illegitimacy of the Arroyo presidency.

The Arroyo Presidency continues to unleash its bloody sword of war against the Filipino people. Extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances continue unabated and escalate, with 886 cases of extrajudicial killings nationwide, 357 survived attacks and 179 are disappeared. Worse, the military and police death squads continue to roam the country with impunity, waiting to squeeze the trigger on another innocent victim. The latest is the attempt to assassinate Ms. Hope Hervilla - BAYAN MUNA's nominee from Panay, three days ago.

These among others clearly show that the Arroyo Presidency is bankrupt, corrupt, and has no respect for human rights. While it continues to cling to power using draconian measures, it is pushed to the wall and is desperately surviving. She, however, will not prevail. Thus, she must heed the nation's call to STEP DOWN from the presidency.
