Today, the Serve the People Brigade - Cordillera Disaster Response Network (STPB) distributed 50 sacks of rice to urban poor households in Piripin Bato, Pico, La Trinidad in Benguet province and Barangay Pinget in Baguio City.

Representatives of the said communities have requested the STPB for support because they are running out of food supply and they do not have enough money to buy food. These families depend on ambulant vending, construction jobs and other “por dia” (per day income) jobs to feed their families. They are no longer earning income due to the lockdown, which is now on its third week. According to them, they have already consumed the food relief that were earlier distributed by the barangay, which lasted for a few days.

The families who received the rice relief heartfully thanked the STPB, the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), the Organisasyon dagiti Nakurapay nga Umili ti Syudad (ORNUS) and those that donated resources to the STPB for its relief missions. A mother expressed that the rice relief was a blessing because she has just cooked the last of their rice supply this morning and was thinking of borrowing rice from the stores.

To date, the Serve the People Brigade-Cordillera Disaster Response Network has distributed food relief to 76 households in Baguio city and vitamin C to 26 families. Relief packs consisted of 1 sack of rice (25 kilograms). STPB has also distributed monggo, dried fish, salt, sugar, cooking oil and canned goods to 27 families. These additional food items depend on availability of donations to the STPB.

Meanwhile, the Health for the People Brigade continued to produce and distributed protective equipment to health workers in partnership with the Philippine Nurses Association - Baguio-Benguet Chapter.

STPB received an overwhelming requests for food relief from urban poor families; stranded students; and informal workers in the city, including ambulant vendors, construction workers, jeepney drivers, musicians and artists; elders; and communities in the Cordillera provinces. Many are anxious on where to get food especially now that the lockdown has been extended to April 30.

STPB and the Health for the People Brigade appeal for your support for food relief, vitamins and basic medicines, and materials for the making of protective equipment (face masks and face shields).

Thank you very much!
