Official statement of Tongtongan ti Umili - Cordillera Peoples Alliance on the brutal shooting of paralegal volunteer Brandon Lee in Ifugao

August 7, 2019

Tongtongan ti Umili-Cordillera Peoples Alliance condemns the brazen attack against Ifugao human rights defender Brandon Lee, who was wounded after unknown assailants fired at their house in Lagawe, Ifugao.

This attack comes after constant visits and intimidation done by forces of the 54th Infantry Battalion Philippine Army (IBPA) against Brandon, officers and members of the Ifugao Peasant Movement (IPM) and the Justice and Peace Advocates Ifugao (JPAI). These forms of intimidation take it heels off Duterte’s Executive Order 70 which emboldens state forces to attack innocent activists and progressive organizations in their effort to end “local communist armed conflict.”

We call on peace-loving individuals to strongly condemn this yet another attack against human rights defenders in the country. We also call on everyone to be vigilant and stand firm on our demand to stop the attacks and end the culture of impunity in this country.

Stop the attacks!
Hands off human rights defenders!
