A Statement of Concern by the University Council of the University of the Philippines Baguio: END ABDUCTIONS AND POLITICAL KILLINGS

Statement from the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Chairperson

The Cordillera Peoples Alliance is enraged by the cowardly murder of Iglesia Filipina Independiente Bishop Alberto Ramento, staunch human rights and peace advocate, and a Bishop of the masses. We strongly condemn the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo government for this and hold it responsible for the continuing spate of political killings, and this time, silencing a peace-loving servant of the Lord and defender of the oppressed people.

Bishop Ramento was pro-humanity. He has fervently upheld the sanctity of life, as Bishop of the Diocese of Tarlac and the Diocese of Ilocos Norte, and as the 9th Obispo Maximo of the IFI. He was also a co-convenor of the Ecumenical Bishops Forum (EBF).

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Bishop Ramento as we press on for our quest for justice for the 763 victims of political killings in the country. We will not be cowed into submission. We join hands with the Church, the bishops, and all church workers over this trying event and demand for speedy and impartial investigation on the bishop’s murder.

The attempt of the government to blanket this alarming incident as a mere case of robbery and homicide is both revolting and an act of impunity. The Arroyo regime has never been more shameless in its killing spree, in an obvious attempt to continue silencing the people’s resounding clamor to stop the political killings in the country.

We demand the Arroyo government to heed the calls from the international community to respect and carryout its obligations under international humanitarian law.

Bishop Ramento’ legacy will not be in vain, as there will be more servants of the people who will rise up to the call of the times.

Justice for Bishop Alberto Ramento!
Uphold human rights and the sanctity of life!
Stop the Killings!
