PHOTOS FROM BUAYA, BALBALAN, KALINGA PROVINCE

DUSK IN BALBALAN, KALINGA. The Buaya tribe dwell in three villages in this town of Kalinga. The tribe maintains its resistance to the mineral exploration activities of the Cordillera Exploration Inc., a subsidiary of Anglo American Mining Company. The exploration covers some 81,000 hectares, which encompasses the tribe's ancestral domain. From the photos above, it is not hard to comprehend the Buaya tribe's determination to fight for its land and resources. (Photos by Sam Anongos)

Rice plants were beginning to ripen when the CPA trooped to Buaya for a mining input in late September. Like many indigenos communities, the area is deprived of basic social servics and infrastructure. During the rainy season, crossing the river skillfully is the only means to reach the community.

Women and children actively participated in the mining discussions. After the river, a bridge is crossed to finally reach the community.
