Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) joins world indigenous peoples, environmental activists and human rights defenders in the Global March for Climate Justice and the International Human Rights Day protests at the ongoing COP28 in Dubai

December 10, 2023

Climate justice is a myth if development aggression in indigenous territories and human rights violations continue with impunity. False solutions to the climate crisis such as large-scale mining, dams and other destructive energy projects at the expense of indigenous peoples and the environment should not be allowed.

If governments are serious in resolving the climate crisis, they must put an end to the plunder of indigenous peoples’ lands and territories and the consequent extrajudicial killings, criminalization, terrorist tagging and wrongful terrorist designation, and other forms of human rights violations committed against indigenous peoples and Defenders.

Without the protection of indigenous peoples’ territories and rights, environmental defenders, and human rights, the climate crisis will only worsen.

These must be truly addressed in the COP deliberations and agreements; otherwise, the COP will remain a business as usual platform, where the interests of capitalist countries and big corporations dominate while poor countries and marginalized peoples including Indigenous Peoples continue to be ignored.
